No 1 Future Leadership skill: Leading Virtual Teams – From the breakfast seminar on Project Management/Virtual teams in Lund – October 4, 2013
Want to stay attractive on the market? Excellence in international affairs? Have fun at work the rest of your life? There are many signs of it: the amount of activities spread over vast distances will increase. This means a number of people will have the task, objectives and goals in common. But else, they share few of your prerequisites:
They are far away from your HQ
They will communicate in their second language (or third, fourth9 They are in other organizational cultures (that’s true for two different cafe’s as well) Most organizations are slimmed – hence skills needed in your project will probably be at another office Your team members live in an organizational culture that probably differs greatly from yours – that’s even true for your local cafe’s. They live in cities with other distribution, traffic, air, street culture, and business rationals. They do other stuff during their free time. Some work extreme overtime – others leave 4 pm sharp. All their experiences may be different from yours. AND: they may have a Control-and-Command manager.
Still – you have to get things done! Are you in for the treat? The above were some of the issues I was asked to share thoughts on at Sodra Esplanaden in Lund in the South of Sweden on October 4, 2013. Picture: Me, interacting with a great audience on leading distant teams And here’s the video – feel free to ask any questions!
Preferably – get to meet physically the individuals of your team at least ONCE. It’s great if all of you can meet at least yearly. But I’m aware that neither of these are possible – for constraints in budget or time.
Second best: Get world class in on-line media! Exercise your trust like you go to the gym or the jogging tour: Do it regularly, add a method and acknowledge yourself and the team for success!
Shape objectives, goals and expected results in a shared vision manner: Withing the given frames of operations, what objectives are possible, how and with whom should they be accomplished?

I still have SO MANY THOUGHTS and feelings after this event. And the are ALL POSITIVE. I share this now, bare with my incompleteness. Thanks!!!
And thank you all great people from SE and elsewhere. Love y’all!
